On Course – University of Potsdam Again Ranked Excellently Among the World’s Best Universities in THE Ranking

In the current 20th edition of the prestigious »Times Higher Education« (THE) ranking, the University of Potsdam has maintained its top position from the previous year. With a placement in the 201–250 range, it holds an excellent position among the 2,092 ranked universities from 115 countries worldwide. Eight German universities are among the top 100 in the ranking, led by the Technical University of Munich (26), the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (38), and Heidelberg University (47). Among the 50 ranked German universities, the University of Potsdam ranked 21st.

For the ninth consecutive year, Oxford University (UK) leads the ranking, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University (both USA). Overall, U.S. and U.K. universities continue to dominate the top 10 of the ranking, but their position is no longer as dominant as in previous years. For the first time, a Brazilian university, the University of São Paulo, made it into the top 200. The University of Potsdam, ranked in the 201–250 range, is on par with George Washington University (USA), Goethe University Frankfurt, and partner universities Tel Aviv University (Israel) and University College Dublin (Ireland).

The THE ranking, along with the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and the QS World University Ranking, is one of the most significant global university rankings. The THE ranking evaluates five main pillars – teaching, research strength (productivity and reputation), research quality (citations), knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

“The University of Potsdam has shown strong performance over the years in an increasingly competitive international field. Particularly in research, we are highly productive and are pleased to receive top marks for research productivity, citations, and impact,” said Prof. Dr. Barbara Höhle, Vice President for Research, Academic Qualification Phase, and Equal Opportunities. “This demonstrates the relevance of our research and motivates us for the future. Researchers from Potsdam are recognized internationally, and Potsdam’s research has global reach!”

Dr. Britta v. Kempen, Vice President for Teaching, Studies, and Europe at the University of Potsdam, is also pleased with the good results: “This success is also a result of good international networking and collaboration. With our European university alliance, EDUC, and many other global partnerships, not only research but also joint teaching and mobility projects take place, which promote student exchange and enhance the overall reputation of the University of Potsdam. The ranking results highlight how crucial strategic internationalization is for the university’s competitiveness in the global arena.”

In July 2024, the University of Potsdam had already secured a top position in the THE ranking for U 50 – universities under 50 years old. Out of 600 ranked institutions from more than 100 countries, the University of Potsdam placed 21st globally and ranked 1st within Germany. Additionally, in the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, the University of Potsdam improved its position to the 301–400 group compared to previous years. In the third major ranking, the QS University Ranking, the University of Potsdam ranked 474th among more than 1,500 universities.
