Cutting-edge research and start-ups as drivers of digitalization
Digitization has revolutionized all areas of life in an unprecedented dynamic. Universities, research institutions and start-ups play a central role in positioning Germany as a leading location for digital innovations in international competition. The Potsdam Science Park in Potsdam-Golm has been expanding for years. To enable world-class research and entrepreneurship, an environment is created here in which innovation can flourish.
Numerous new areas are currently being built as well as the GO:IN 2 technology centre in order to specifically promote the settlement of new companies and start-ups in the growing business and research location, which are setting new standards with future-proof products.
At the interface of biology, data science and bioinformatics
The British company Eagle Genomics is currently opening a new location in the Potsdam Science Park. Eagle Genomics operates the e[datascientist] platform, which systematizes the innovation process of companies and facilitates and accelerates it many times over. The platform makes it possible to show connections between biological data. For example, metagenomic data from large collections of bacteria from the human intestine, skin or soil can be analyzed using data science methods. “With our platform, we can better understand the quantitative relationships between nutrition, digestion and other indicators such as the immune system or metabolism,” explains Dr. Sven Sewitz, Head of Biodata Innovation. In the food industry, but also in other industries, new relationships can be identified and new solutions derived from abstract data.
Rehab via teletherapy
eGeia GmbH is a start-up that wants to set new impulses in the field of rehabilitation with the telemedical assistance system eGeia active®. With the help of the teletherapy system, patients can carry out their rehabilitation themselves in home training with online feedback. To this end, the company has implemented a rehabilitation system for targeted exercise therapy with over 100 exercises for cardio, lumbar and cervical spine training and other programs, including balance disorders. In particular, people in rural regions with a poorly developed health infrastructure should benefit from being able to train regardless of locations and practice opening hours.
The future of diagnostics is digital
Not least due to the Corona pandemic, the digitization of the healthcare system came into focus. In order to take this trend into account, the research focus “Digital Diagnostics” is to be established as a component of immune research in the future at the Institute for Bioanalytics and Bioprocesses of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology (IZI-BB) in Potsdam. The research is intended to lay the foundations for overcoming the challenges of demographic development and ensuring the care of patients in rural areas. At Fraunhofer IZI-BB, biotechnological solutions are already being developed for medical issues, animal health, nutrition, cosmetics and the environment. The federal government will strengthen the new focus with 25.7 million euros over the next five years – with the state of Brandenburg contributing a further 4.8 million euros.
More capacity for IT innovation
The University of Potsdam is expanding its location in the Potsdam Science Park with the new building of the Institute of Computer Science and Computational Science. The institute’s research spectrum ranges from theoretical computer science to machine learning and data science to complex multimedia application architectures. The building was donated by the Hasso Plattner Foundation and built in less than two years, the state of Brandenburg provided the land and 1.5 million euros for the equipment. At the opening in March 2021, workplaces for 100 employees and approx. 800 students will be available.
