Congratulations to the Winners of the Potsdam Science Park Team at CITY CYCLING 2025!

The CITY CYCLING event in Potsdam was a complete success for our »Team Potsdam Science Park« again in 2025: From June 2 to June 22, we pedaled energetically together and collected over 18,000 kilometers – on roads and bike paths around Potsdam. This allowed us to save nearly 3,000 kg of CO₂ compared to driving and proudly placed us in 8th position in the overall ranking of the city. Thank you very much to everybody involved for actively participating participating and showing commitment to climate change and a greener city of Potsdam. We are very pleased to announce this year’s winners of the PSP team.

A big thank you to all 64 cyclists for this outstanding team effort – and congratulations to our top performers!

Leading the pack: 1st place in Team “Potsdam Science Park” went to a scientist from the Fraunhofer Institute of Cell Therapy and Immunology, Branch Bioanalytics and Bioprocesses IZI-BB – impressive achievement! In second place, a dedicated resident of Golm pedaled his way onto the podium. And the 3rd place also goes to a member of our research community: a scientist from the Fraunhofer Institute of Applied Polymer Research IAP made it to the top three.

  • 1st Place: Marcus Menger (Fraunhofer IZI-BB) – 51 rides, 1,348.60 km
  • 2nd Place: Ernst-Günter Tauschke (Golm resident) – 56 rides, 1,180.20 km
  • 3rd Place: Bert Volkert (Fraunhofer IAP) – 26 rides, 1,179.70 km

What is CITY CYCLING?

The annual CITY CYCLING campaign is a competition where participants aim to cycle as many everyday trips as possible over a period of 21 days – all in the name of climate protection. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a daily cyclist or just getting started – every kilometer counts, especially if it replaces a car trip.

Why this campaign?

In German cities, 40–50% of all car trips are shorter than five kilometers – distances that can easily be covered by bike. According to estimates, around 30% of car journeys in urban areas could be replaced by cycling (Federal Environment Agency, 2021). During the campaign, participants experience their city from the cyclist’s perspective, helping to identify both strengths and areas needing improvement in local cycling infrastructure.

CITY CYCLING an initiative by the Climate Alliance – a network of European municipalities working in partnership with Indigenous communities and developing local responses to global climate change.
