“Digital Diagnostics” – More than 30 Million Euros for Research Location in Potsdam

Fraunhofer IZI-BB | The Fraunhofer Institute for Bioprocesses and Bioanalytics at the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology (IZI-BB) in the Potsdam Science Park will receive up to an additional 25.7 million euros from the federal government over the next five years. This was decided by the Bundestag on 11 December 2020 as part of the federal budget for 2021. The funds are intended to strengthen the research focus “Digital Diagnostics” as part of Fraunhofer immune research in Potsdam.

The state is contributing a further 4.8 million euros to the financing. Further measures to strengthen immune research are to be promoted at the Fraunhofer sites in Berlin, Bavaria and Hamburg.

Brandenburg’s Minister of Science, Manja Schüle, welcomes the decision. “Digital diagnostics are becoming increasingly important. This is shown by the experience with Corona, but it is also evident in the challenges of demographic development and the care of patients in rural areas. The Fraunhofer Center for Digital Diagnostics will create a platform that is unique in Germany for the pooling of different expertise and the strengthening of research – and Potsdam will play a central role here in the future. The decision of the Bundestag strengthens health research in Brandenburg and the science location in Golm. And it makes it clear once again: The future is made in Brandenburg.”

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology, Bioanalytics and Bioprocesses IZI-BB with its more than 100 employees, analytical and biotechnological solutions are developed for medical issues, animal health, nutrition, cosmetics and the environment. The research focuses on sample preparation, development of molecular recognition elements and data acquisition, as well as miniaturization and automation of corresponding technologies in order to develop reliable, flexible and easy-to-use process flows. The Potsdam branch of the institute was founded in 2005 and has been part of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology in Leipzig since 2014. The federal and state governments are supporting the work of the Potsdam research institution with around 8 million euros this year.
