Go-ahead for the new GO:IN 2 building in the Potsdam Science Park

City of Potsdam | Today, Mayor Mike Schubert laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new office and laboratory building in the Potsdam Science Park. The new GO:IN 2 building is being built on behalf of the City of Potsdam by the municipal technology and commercial centres Potsdam GmbH (TGZP). With the existing Golm Innovation Center GO:IN, the city already has an office and laboratory building for founders and young companies at the site. This house opened in 2007 and was filled quickly. As a result, the spatial growth and development opportunities of local companies were quickly limited again and restricted by funding regulations in GO:IN. In order to avert the migration of these companies, the city decided to build another office and laboratory building itself.

With the GO:IN 2, more than 6,300 m² of gross floor area is to be created. The calculated construction costs amount to 15.2 million euros, and if everything goes according to plan, the building is scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2021.

In contrast to its predecessor, the new construction of GO:IN 2 deliberately avoided the use of subsidies in order to avoid the associated restrictions for the rented companies. Instead, the city is investing 5.2 million euros in this project itself. “We speak carefully of ‘investing’ here. Because we expect the funds used not only to be a financial, but also a structural dividend for the location, the state capital and the entire region,” said Mayor Schubert.

While only an imposing excavation pit bears witness to the new building for the time being, the shell of another office and laboratory building can already be seen on the neighbouring property. Due to its floor plan, the so-called “H-Lab” of Projektimmobilien Gewerbe AG is being built here. But Managing Director of TGZP GmbH, Steffen Schramm, who is also the builder of GO:IN 2, sees these neighboring developments positively. “This is not competition, but an enrichment. Because while we focus on small-scale rentals in GO:IN 2, the neighboring project is geared towards larger-scale rentals. In this interaction, we can meet the entire range of demand.”

“The declared goal of the state capital Potsdam is to develop the Potsdam Science Park into an international innovation location. In addition to GO:IN 2, we have initiated numerous other measures and projects for sustainable and integrated site development,” says Bernd Rubelt, Councillor for Urban Development, Construction, Economy and the Environment.

In the meantime, investors and companies have been won over for all building plots in the vicinity of GO:IN. With the Technology Campus, a first expansion of the Science Park was also initiated. Further settlement areas for companies and for the expansion of the university will be created there. With the new building of the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Potsdam, a first project is already being visibly implemented there. With the Neue Golmer Mitte, a new and urban centre is also to be created in the medium term in order to further increase the attractiveness of the location, also in terms of the quality of life, work and stay for all users. And long-term spatial expansion options are also already being considered. At the beginning of this year, a decision was therefore made to examine the possibilities of a northern expansion. The preparatory study for the initiation of an urban development measure will start next year.
