Growing research strength – number of doctoral students at FGW increases rapidly

Faculty of Health Sciences Brandenburg | More and more young researchers are taking the opportunity to complete a doctorate or habilitation at the new Faculty of Health Sciences Brandenburg (FGW). The Faculty of Health Sciences was founded in 2018 as a joint faculty of the University of Potsdam, the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane and the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg.

Currently, 52 people are working towards a Dr. med. and 32 a Dr. rer medic. The majority of doctoral students come from the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane (MHB), but researchers from the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg and the University of Potsdam have also registered for doctoral studies. Four doctoral theses have now been defended. Seven habilitation procedures have been initiated. The first successful habilitation candidate is dermatologist Georgios Nikolakis, who was able to present the latest research findings on the skin disease acne inversa in his thesis.

The increased number of registered doctorates and habilitations is an expression of the growing research reputation of the still young Faculty of Health Sciences Brandenburg. “Many clinicians are taking the opportunity to open up additional career paths in science with a doctorate. This is another way of retaining medical professionals in the state of Brandenburg in the long term,” says the Dean of the FGW, Prof. Dr. med. Notger Müller. The possibility of a doctorate at the Faculty of Health Sciences also increases the attractiveness of studying medicine at the MHB. “Many prospective students ask at the application stage whether they can complete their studies with a doctorate,” says Müller. As the number of students at the MHB increases, so do applications for doctorates. This trend will continue when the MHB opens another degree course in dentistry in the summer semester of 2024.

FGW academic staff who have not studied medicine can complete a doctorate at the faculty to become Dr. rer. medic. The subject spectrum ranges from bioinformatics to healthcare research and rehabilitation. In order to provide doctoral students with the best possible support, the faculty offers an interdisciplinary qualification program. “It teaches skills for planning and conducting studies, explains the rules of good scientific and clinical practice and raises awareness of the ethical aspects of research work,” explains rehabilitation physician Prof. Dr Heinz Völler, who heads the program. “In addition, the doctoral students acquire the necessary know-how for writing scientific publications and presenting and discussing their research results competently,” says Völler, who chairs the FGW’s doctoral committee.
