Hasso Plattner Foundation donates new building for Institute of Computer Science and Computational Science
Press release of the University of Potsdam | The new home of the Institute of Computer Science and Computational Science at the University of Potsdam on the Golm campus in the Potsdam Science Park is ready. The Hasso Plattner Foundation donated the building and erected the building in less than two years. The state of Brandenburg has provided the land as well as around 1.5 million euros for the equipment. The institute will move into the new building, which has now been completed, in March 2021.
The President of the University of Potsdam, Prof. Oliver Günther, Ph.D., says: “As a computer scientist, I am of course particularly pleased that the subject is now also represented on our science-oriented Golm campus. The diverse cross-relationships of our IfICS to other subjects and also to the non-university research institutions located in Golm will thus be further deepened.”
The Hasso Plattner Foundation states: “Since the founding of the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering in 1998, we have found a very attractive location for innovation and study at the University of Potsdam and in Brandenburg. We owe this to the constant support of the Lord Mayor, the Minister of Science and the Prime Minister. The need for talent, especially with skills in the broad field of computer science, is growing dramatically. We are therefore pleased to be able to continue building on the very successful foundation.”
The new building of the Institute of Computer Science and Computational Science is the first building block of the expansion of the Golm campus for the University of Potsdam. From the beginning of 2021, workplaces for around 100 employees and around 800 students will be available in the building. On the ground floor there are seminar rooms, computer pools and a study area, while on the two upper floors there are office workstations, group study rooms, laboratories for special computer technology facilities and a central technical room for the institute’s extensive server technology.
The Managing Director of the Institute of Computer Science and Computational Science, Prof. Dr. Ulrike Lucke, says: “We are preparing our move in March at full speed. Not only offices and laboratories are moving, but also our institute’s IT has to be dismantled at Griebnitzsee and rebuilt in Golm in the shortest possible time. We will then start the summer semester in the new building.” The vacant building on the Griebnitzsee campus, which previously housed the Institute of Computer Science and Computational Science, will be used by the Digital Engineering Faculty in the future.
The University of Potsdam and the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering gGmbH jointly support the Digital Engineering Faculty of the University of Potsdam, which was founded in 2017. The faculty is funded by the Hasso Plattner Foundation. The Hasso Plattner Institute, founded by SAP founder Hasso Plattner, was founded in 1998 as part of a public-private partnership with the state of Brandenburg and was initially an affiliated institute of the University of Potsdam. The aim of the cooperation is to further develop the Digital Engineering Faculty into a university center of excellence in the field of digital engineering. Currently, more than 700 students are studying there in 5 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs.
