Kick-off for the Technology Campus expansion project in the Potsdam Science Park

City of Potsdam | Minister of Economic Affairs hands over funding for expansion projects: The Potsdam Science Park is being expanded. Today, Minister of Economic Affairs Jörg Steinbach presented a subsidy notice of 5.47 million euros to Mayor Mike Schubert. With the Technology Campus, the science park is to be enlarged by 10 hectares of settlement and expansion areas. This is intended to create the conditions for a steady and continuous development of the site. “The common goal of the city and state is to further develop the Potsdam Science Park into an international innovation location. The approved funding for the Technology Campus is an important contribution to achieving this goal,” says Mayor Mike Schubert.

Minister of Economic Affairs Steinbach emphasized: “The future is being shaped in the Potsdam Science Park. Beyond the city limits, this important science and research location also provides strong impetus for the development of the region and the state of Brandenburg. The current expansion project is another key building block for the scientific and economic progress of the Science Park, which we are very happy to support.”

The total costs for the development of the Technology Campus are calculated at around 12 million euros. The grant from the state will be used to subsidize parts of the development costs. The applicant and recipient of the funding is the state capital of Potsdam. The municipal ProPotsdam GmbH, which already acquired the land in question from private owners in 2017, has been commissioned with the concrete implementation. Construction work is scheduled to begin at the beginning of 2020 and will take about a year.

“Today is a good day for us. Because with the grant notice, we not only get money, but also the green light for implementation. Now we can start the development work in the first quarter of 2020 and sell land. This has not been possible so far. But now the starting signal has been given,” says ProPotsdam Managing Director Bert Nicke happily.

The Technology Campus is to be used to create settlement and rental space for companies in the fields of research, development and knowledge-based production. The focus is specifically on scientific topics and fields of application such as biotechnology, diagnostics, medical technology, pharmacy and materials science. A corresponding marketing concept has already been developed in cooperation with the scientific facilities and institutes of the site. There have already been numerous contacts with companies and investors. There are already interested parties for two areas.

Around three hectares of the total area have already been sold for expansion projects at the University of Potsdam. With the new building of the Institute of Computer Science and Computational Science at the University of Potsdam, a first project is already being visibly implemented. Other buildings are to follow.

“The week before last the GO:IN 2, today the Technology Campus. And we continue! Our goal is integrated site development. To this end, we have already initiated further projects, such as the northern expansion. In the medium term, a new and urban centre is also to be created with the Neue Golmer Mitte in order to further increase the quality of life, work and stay for all users,” says Bernd Rubelt, Councillor for Urban Development, Construction, Economy and the Environment.

In order to open up long-term spatial development and expansion opportunities for the site, a decision was made at the beginning of this year to examine the possibilities of a northern expansion. The preparatory study for the initiation of an urban development measure will start next year.
