Markus Antonietti elected to Chinese Chemical Society – Highest award in China
MPIKG | Prof. Dr. Markus Antonietti has been appointed an honorary member for life by the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS). In a letter from the professional society, this nomination is described as the “highest award to the world’s most respected chemists”. Antonietti is thus one of a total of 60 honorary members, 20 of whom come from Europe and five from Germany.
Markus Antonietti is recognized for his contribution to the progress of chemistry in general and to the development of chemistry in China. “This award is important to me because knowledge and training enable mutual understanding and relativize enemy stereotypes,” says Markus Antonietti. He is one of the most internationally renowned scientists in the field of materials and polymer chemistry. The professional society justifies its choice by saying that he has achieved a number of outstanding innovations and achievements in cross-border areas such as the synthesis of new polymers and sol-gel chemistry, porous polymers and carbon materials, crystallization control, green chemistry and, more recently, carbon-negative materials and processes, energy storage and artificial photosynthesis (raw materials from CO2 and light).
At the same time, Markus Antonietti has made excellent contributions to cooperative research and talent training with China, according to the proclamation letter: He has visited China many times for academic purposes and scientific research collaborations and founded two German-Chinese cooperation partner groups and two international cooperation joint laboratories there. He has also been awarded an honorary chair by the University of Science and Technology of China, Zhejiang University and Fuzhou University.
