
PSP Conference 2021 — Innovation Forum for Research, Products, Collaborations and Startups
Press release | Once again held virtually, the PSP Conference 2021 on November 23 and 24 will present research innovations, new products, and processes from the Potsdam Science Park environment. This year, the cross-industry High-Tech Innovation Forum will focus on innovation ecosystems and success factors of start-ups and point out new ways for the exploitation of sustainable research developments in the economy.
The programme of the PSP Conference 2021 is aimed in particular at companies and start-ups, researchers and investors. Participants can follow all sessions on November 23 in the livestream. On 24 November, the audience and participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas at the “1:1 Networking”.
Innovation Ecosystems
Changes in technology, environment and society are opening up new corridors for a wide range of new technologies. However, major breakthroughs in science can rarely be planned. So what are the prerequisites for the emergence of research innovations? In his keynote speech, Max Planck Director Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Lothar Willmitzer from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology will use various examples to show how curiosity-driven research projects can lead to innovations and start-ups.
How can accelerators, incubators and funding institutions channel potential and thus build more successful innovation ecosystems? As part of the English-language panel “Innovation Ecosystems – Beyond Borders: Excellence Through Focus”, innovation experts from Cambridge Illumina for Startups, the Life Science Factory in Göttingen, the HPI School of Entrepreneurship, Medical Valley from the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region and Potsdam Science Park will talk about building successful ecosystems for start-ups and innovation.
Strong companies from Potsdam and Brandenburg
The business software company Signavio and the outdoor app komoot are examples of success for innovative start-ups from Potsdam. Signavio co-founder and HPI alumnus Dr. Gero Decker successfully sold the company to global market leader SAP in January of this year. Komoot co-founder Markus Hallermann and team set up their app with early-stage financing and business angels, among others. After that, the team really took off. Every sunny weekend, the GPS route planner gains popularity. Together with investor Dr. Jan Alberti from the venture capital company bmp ventures, the founders will share their own experiences and talk about success factors for company growth in “Scaling Up – How Successful Startups Become Big Players”.
Science as a resource for growth and technology transfer
This year’s program of the PSP Conference will be opened by Dr. Steffen Kammradt, Managing Director of the Brandenburg Economic Development Corporation (WFBB), and Prof. Alexander Böker, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP.
Agnes von Matuschka, Managing Director of Standortmanagement Golm GmbH, will report on how the Potsdam Science Park will continue to grow in the future as a science and business location with potential for cooperation between research and business. Sascha Thormann, Managing Director of Potsdam Transfer, the central institution for innovation, start-ups, knowledge and technology transfer at the University of Potsdam, will present the latest activities of knowledge and technology transfer to Brandenburg. largest university.
Successes of innovation transfer between research and industry
Under the title “Exploiting and Protecting Practice-Oriented Research – The Path to a Patent”, Potsdam Transfer will present inventions from science from their creation to exploitation opportunities in industry. Researchers and transfer officers from the University of Potsdam and the Fraunhofer IAP as well as the Fraunhofer High Performance Center “Functional Integration” will share their own experiences from research transfer and show ways in which patents can be used to protect new processes and products.
The session “Transfer of research innovations to industry” will focus on best practice. Experts from Fraunhofer IZI-BB, the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, and the University of Potsdam will present high-tech products and report on current collaborations with partner companies.
Startup Pitch – Presenting Pioneers
This year, the conference audience will once again award the audience prize for the best-positioned start-up at the “Startup Pitch – Presenting Pioneers”. The extensive program of the PSP Conference 2021 will feature around 30 participants from the Fraunhofer and Max Planck Institutes in Potsdam and the University of Potsdam, as well as companies and start-ups from the Potsdam Science Park environment. Opportunities for networking with all participants will be offered by the “1:1 Networking” on the digital conference platform on 24 November.

About the Potsdam Science Park: The Potsdam Science Park is one of the largest and most exciting science locations in the capital region of Berlin-Brandenburg.
