Sustainable Energy Supply at the Fraunhofer IAP
As part of a pioneering initiative to promote renewable energies, a photovoltaic system is being installed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP in the Potsdam Science Park. The infrastructure measure is being realised as part of the Fraunhofer climate strategy.
By using solar energy, the institute’s ecological footprint will be reduced, making a significant contribution to climate protection: “Resource efficiency is not only a fundamental component of our research and development activities but also a key part of our operations. The photovoltaic system underscores our commitment to sustainability and demonstrates that research and development can align with environmentally friendly processes,” explains Institute Director Prof. Alexander Böker.
The photovoltaic system has a capacity of around 90 kilowatts peak (kWp) and achieves an annual yield of approximately 80,000 kWh/year. “This will mainly compensate for our peak electricity demand in the summer. We already cover the majority of our consumption with green electricity. The photovoltaic system marks another step towards sustainable energy supply and environmental protection. To reduce energy costs in the long term and make our energy-intensive scientific infrastructure more sustainable and independent, there is the possibility of expanding the system,” explains Armin Reimann, Head of Building and Facility Management at Fraunhofer IAP.
By commissioning the photovoltaic system, Fraunhofer IAP is sending a clear signal about the future viability of its infrastructure and reinforcing its commitment to the responsible use of natural resources. Further measures to increase energy efficiency are planned.
The Fraunhofer Climate Strategy
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft contributes to a sustainable and climate-neutral economy and society through research and innovation. With its climate strategy, it structurally follows the recommendations of the UN Global Compact for establishing climate management. The Fraunhofer Climate Strategy aims to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, promote the use of renewable energies, and transition to green energy supply and climate-neutral operation of the infrastructure. A central component of this strategy is the implementation of energy efficiency and climate protection measures at the institutes, including the installation of photovoltaic systems.
