Topping-out ceremony for the new building of the company biocyc in the Potsdam Science Park

Press release | Family-owned company erects laboratory and production building in Potsdam Science Park: On November 10, 2022, the Potsdam-based company biocyc celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the newest building in the Potsdam Science Park in the festively decorated shell in the presence of employees, guests from the business community and family members. The family-owned company biocyc is the first owner-managed private company to build its own building in the Potsdam Science Park.

The company biocyc has been in existence since 1995 and initially started in Luckenwalde. For about eight years now, the company headquarters have been located in the GO:IN Golm Innovation Center, in the Potsdam Science Park. biocyc specializes in synthetically produced peptides and a specially developed technology for the production of rabbit monoclonal antibodies, which are used in cancer diagnosis. “The antibodies we produce are used worldwide in hospitals with pathology institutes,” explains Managing Director and biotechnology expert Alexander Gorczyza, “We have developed a new technology for antibody production and are one of the few companies in the world that are able to do so. Demand has increased accordingly. However, we cannot expand further on the existing space in the GO:IN.”

Agnes von Matuschka, Managing Director of Standortmanagement Golm GmbH, sees the decision for the new building as a benefit for the growing community of locations: “In the Potsdam Science Park, companies can grow and find space for production. “biocyc not only lays the foundation for your own building,” she emphasizes, “but also for an ecosystem of young and established companies in the immediate vicinity of research.”

The company currently employs 17 people, and the 1,600 square metre new building will accommodate up to 50 employees in the future. The new areas will be adapted precisely to the needs of the company and its employees, from floor plans to laboratory equipment.

Opening of the laboratory and production building in mid-2023

The opening is scheduled for mid-2023. The move to the new premises is then to be realized parallel to regular operations. “We can’t just interrupt our production and laboratory operations. It will be a certain challenge for our team, but we are preparing well for it so that we can continue working seamlessly on the opposite side of the street in the new building,” says Alexander Gorczyza. He sees the proximity to the University of Potsdam, the scientific institutes of the Max Planck and Fraunhofer Societies and other companies as a significant advantage for his company. “We cooperate with various institutions in the Potsdam Science Park and have also worked closely with Prof. Katja Hanack from the University of Potsdam, for example,” says the entrepreneur, “so it was obvious to preserve the direct neighborhood.”
