From the smallest cell to the limits of the universe – Open Day at the Potsdam Science Park

Press release | A criminal case with a scientific search for clues, solar cells made from household materials, current infant research, Einstein’s universe, biomaterials for the future, the latest findings for a healthy diet or better hair growth, lessons in the VR classroom and a science slam in the afternoon – on Saturday, September 3, Brandenburg’s largest science park will open its doors to the public from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Exciting excursion for the whole family

Two Fraunhofer Institutes, three Max Planck Institutes, the University of Potsdam with the faculties of the Golm campus, the Brandenburg State Archive, the GO:IN and GO:IN 2 innovation centres, various companies, the Fröbel Kindergarten Springfrosch, the Golm site management, investors and other contributors are working together to create an extensive and varied programme for all age groups. On September 3 from 11:00 a.m., guests will have the special opportunity to talk to scientists, discover research innovations and future solutions from Potsdam-Golm, and take a personal look behind the scenes of the institutes of the Potsdam Science Park.

At 12:00 p.m., Dr. Manja Schüle, Minister of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg, and Bernd Rubelt, Councillor for Urban Development, Construction, Economy and Environment of the City of Potsdam, will visit the growing science location and welcome visitors to the Fraunhofer Conference Center.

First-hand science

In experiments and scientific lectures and at numerous information booths, visitors will gain entertaining insights into scientific work, current research projects and new technologies in the Potsdam Science Park. Admission to the open day is free. The program is available on the Internet at: tag-der-offenen-tueren.potsdam-sciencepark.de.

During various guided tours, interested parties can find out about the work in the individual research institutes, the history and the development of the new buildings at the site. The greenhouses of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology MPI-MP and the Biotechnikum of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP are also accessible. Answers to questions about studying and student life in Potsdam-Golm can be found at the University of Potsdam. At the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, the trainees report on their training occupations in the research context.

In numerous hands-on activities, children can get creative by painting with algae, at the microscope, building their own cell, writing with a quill, making funny aliens and UFOs at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (MPI AEI) and making colorful buttons. At the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology, Bioanalytics and Bioprocesses Division IZI-BB, a criminal case has to be solved.

During a children’s rally through the Potsdam Science Park, the younger guests collect stamps at various stations and receive a prize at the finish point. In the afternoon at 4:00 p.m., three bright minds from the University of Potsdam will compete against each other at the Science Slam at the Fraunhofer Conference Center – the audience will decide which of them wins.

This year, the University of Potsdam will present itself with the institutes of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Human Sciences at the Fraunhofer Conference Center – in this way, all exhibition areas are easily accessible for visitors next to each other.
