POROUS wins Innovation Award Berlin Brandenburg 2023!

Congratulations! The startup POROUS from the Potsdam Science Park has received the Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award 2023 for its innovative ultrasound procedure for the early detection of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a chronic widespread disease that affects millions of people worldwide. POROUS has developed an innovative procedure that uses ultrasound to reliably quantify microstructural tissue changes in the bone wall.

The aim of the company POROUS, based in the Potsdam Science Park in the Potsdam district of Golm, is to enable the early detection of osteoporosis for the first time with an accurate, cost-effective and X-ray-free ultrasound diagnosis of fracture risk.

In addition to POROUS, an active substance against pancreatic cancer and a technology for eliminating highly toxic wastewater in the coating process of lightweight automotive components received awards. The jury was also impressed by mobile sensor plates for detecting pathogens and a premixing plant that significantly accelerates the reaction of cement while saving CO². The winners of the Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award each receive prize money of 15,000 euros.

Franziska Giffey, Berlin’s Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises: “We want to become the number one location for innovation in Europe. The winners of this year’s competition once again impressively demonstrate how much innovative power there is in the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region. With their pioneering products and solutions, they are helping to make us one of the driving forces of the German economy today and together form an up-and-coming, innovative East German economic region. I congratulate the award-winning projects and wish them and all competition participants every success for the future.”

Jörg Steinbach, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labour and Energy of the State of Brandenburg: “Once again this year, we have honoured great and forward-looking innovations with the Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award, which clearly demonstrate the diversity of business and research in the capital region. The award winners focus on improving the quality of life for people and nature. The problems we face today can only be solved with the help of such creative minds. I would like to congratulate you all and wish you every success for the future!”

About the Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award

The Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award is the oldest of its kind in the region. It was established in 1984 by the Berlin Senate Department for Economics. Since 1992, the (current) Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises and the Brandenburg Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labor and Energy have jointly awarded the innovation prize.

Since 1984, more than 4,450 applications have been submitted and over 175 award winners have been honored. Up to five winners are honored each year. The nominations for the finalists and award winners are traditionally made by an independent jury of 23 experts. The prizes are endowed with 15,000 euros each.
