Potsdam calls for tenders for Golm 2040 urban development framework plan

The district of Golm is one of the growing districts of the state capital Potsdam. The special feature of Golm lies in its diversity – and at the same time represents a special challenge: Potsdam Science Park, historic village center, new settlement areas, as well as open spaces and adjacent natural and landscape areas are in the immediate vicinity. Important places of identification, also for the people of Potsdam living here.

This is not the only reason why a variety of aspects must be taken into account in the further development of the district in the west of the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam. The aim is to maintain the special quality of life in Golm and at the same time to take into account the needs of the research and innovation park.

Making the most of the potential of the Golm district

A concrete vision for the sustainable development of the district is now to be developed as part of an urban development framework plan commissioned by the state capital of Potsdam. In December 2020, the Golm 2040 urban development framework plan was therefore put out to tender as part of a public participation competition. It is to be carried out in the period from 1 May 2021 to 30 September 2022.

The following fields of action were defined in the tender for the Golm 2040 framework plan. Existing current concepts and plans for the district are to be incorporated in each case or serve as the basis for the new vision.

  • Landscape
  • Historic location Reiherberg
  • Anger Reiherbergstraße
  • Living in the Feldmark
  • Sports area Kuhfortdamm
  • Universitäts-Campus
  • Science Park
  • Technology Campus
  • Infrastrukturband
  • Neue Mitte Golm
  • Infrastructure band (supply and service offerings, “Mobility of the future”)
  • VU area Golm Nord, conceptual solutions, three development scenarios (occupies a special position due to the classification under planning law in the special urban planning law)

The new innovative and urban urban quarter is to integrate existing structures in a meaningful way and be supplemented by sustainably designed areas. The concept design is to follow a “look from the outside in” based on the adjacent landscape areas. Open spaces and quality of stay are to be considered as well as aspects of mobility and public transport, stationary traffic or parking situation in Golm, climate and issues of nature and species protection. These topics are particularly relevant with regard to the possible expansion of the district by a further 60 hectares in the area of the Golm-Nord VU area.

In the area of the Potsdam Science Park, the focus is specifically on the development of the site with regard to the existing and new offers for science, research and teaching as well as the associated commercial use – for example on the Technology Campus. The urban development potentials for expansion and densification are being examined. “Here […] student housing, easily accessible supply facilities, public space with quality of stay, etc. are playing an increasingly important role in the location positioning,” according to the announcement of the state capital Potsdam.
