Potsdam Science Park — Expansion of the Innovation Location 2023-2026
Press release | The Potsdam Science Park is expanding. In mid-2022, the science and business location recorded the highest demand in its 30-year history to date. Planning for further construction projects is already in full swing. On more than 78,000 m² of new office and laboratory space, premises for more than 1000 employees will be built here in the next few years.
Here we present the most important construction projects in the Potsdam Science Park. More than 12,500 people are already researching, working and studying at the site. Key industries for new companies are biotechnology, life sciences and new materials, as well as numerous other scientific disciplines.
DiGOS – a company that explores space with laser pulses – is planning a building on the Technology Campus
The company DiGOS was only founded in 2014, but since then it has already achieved some considerable success. They already implemented projects for the European Space Agency ESA in 2018 and installed the first turnkey laser station on Tenerife in mid-2021. Around 425 people now work for the company, which focuses on satellite laser ranging (SLR) – a technology that can be used to record the positions of satellites 20,000 kilometres away with millimetre accuracy. Only a few companies in the world are able to do this. With the success, the need for new premises has also grown. That is why the company now wants to relocate its headquarters to Potsdam-Golm. In the next few years, a separate, three-storey building is to be built here in the Potsdam Science Park on the Technology Campus. According to Managing Director André Kloth, there should then be enough space for 50 to 60 employees on 1,000 square meters of office space. But the building is to offer even more: “For our high-tech devices, we also need an integration and test hall. We want to have enough space to pre-integrate entire laser stations and install them on the roof for preliminary acceptance,” says Managing Director Kloth. The company plans to start planning in 2023 and submit the building application in the summer of 2023 at the earliest, with the move-in scheduled for around 2026. They chose the Potsdam Science Park for various reasons: “The connection to Berlin and the surrounding area is fantastic,” explains Managing Director André Kloth. “On site, we have the university with the institutes of astronomy, physics, computer science and geosciences. Of course, it is a great locational advantage for us to use the academic potential for joint projects or the promotion of young talent.”
QUADRATUM POTSDAM – Building ensemble of four buildings with high sustainability standards
The HEGEMANN-REINERS GROUP acquired the property near the Golm train station on the west side of the Potsdam Science Park back in 2018. Between the new innovation centres and the roundabout, a building ensemble with four buildings is planned. In the first construction phase of the QUADRATUM POTSDAM, two buildings are to be built initially. Construction is scheduled to start in 2023, and construction work is expected to last two and a half years.Approximately 11,000 square meters of space will then be available, which will accommodate both offices and laboratories. The start of construction for the other two buildings is planned for the connection, depending on the user. When it comes to interior fittings, the HEGEMANN-REINERS GROUP is focusing on user-centricity: “The laboratory expansion is being carried out in close consultation with the interested parties,” says project manager Anne Helbig. The topic of sustainability is particularly important in the project: “Sustainable materials should be taken into account in the context of the corresponding development. There should be many green spaces, a nice roof terrace – just a place to feel good,” explains Helbig. She feels that the Potsdam Science Park is the ideal location for the building ensemble: “A lot has happened in recent years. New buildings and institutes were added. The location is very promising for the future, especially because the topic of life science has become much more important,” says the project manager.
Technology Campus – space for companies in the field of technology, research and production
Opposite the Brandenburg State Archives, on the other side of the railway, the Technology Campus, which covers around ten hectares, is currently being built. In the first quarter of 2020, the municipal ProPotsdam GmbH opened the concept award procedure for the commercial space. With success: Many companies have already secured the first parcels of land for their new buildings. Companies from other areas such as IT and production can also be considered. The 5,500 m² district multi-storey car park is also to find its place here. The first buildings are expected to be occupied in 2026.
InnoLab – “entrance gate” and imposing building with flexible office space
According to the development company homepoint, the InnoLab is to become nothing less than the “gateway to the Potsdam Science Park”. And indeed, with the crystalline structures in the façade, the InnoLab makes a strong statement within the Potsdam Science Park. Located directly on the Golm railway station, office and laboratory space on up to 12,500 square metres are to be created here, according to the latest drafts. First occupancy is planned for the fourth quarter of 2024. The design of the premises is based entirely on the wishes of the tenants. Several floors can be rented, but at the same time they also want to leave space for coworking spaces to ensure the necessary flexibility. With the complexity of the laboratories, everything is possible, from the standard level to complex laboratory tracts. Christian Piper, Chief Operating Officer of the homepoint Group: “The Potsdam Science Park is an incredibly dynamic location. It is very exciting what is being created here. We want to be there with the InnoLab and set new impulses. It is important to us that we are not only a place of work, but also a meeting place. With the special location in the Potsdam Science Park and the unique design, we want to appeal above all to the international audience.” Oliver Riebartsch, Managing Partner of the Satori Group, adds: “We are currently experiencing a boom in the life science sector. We are currently in advanced talks with a leading international asset management company, whose global network of renowned innovation drivers in the field of life science and medical technology will further spur the growth of the location. “
iQ space Potsdam – innovative research and office space for life science companies
True to the motto “Empowering Science”, iQ spaces plans innovative rental space for science and life science companies. The new construction project iQ space Potsdam on the Technology Campus of the Potsdam Science Park is intended to set new standards in the field of modern and flexible laboratory and office space: specially planned and professionally managed research, laboratory and office space is to offer tenants such as research companies and startups perfect working conditions, maximum functionality and a synergetic working environment. Thanks to its good connections and proximity to the university and science, the Potsdam Science Park offers the ideal conditions for this, explains Moritz Fischer, project manager at iQ spaces. Modern and flexible floor plans for laboratories and offices are currently being planned on a total of 10,000 square meters, which will be ready for occupancy by the fourth quarter of 2024. To this end, concrete talks are already being held with potential tenants. Rental units from 300 m² are to be built. “Our concept combines efficient technology and safety in the laboratory with modern New Work working environments,” says Moritz Fischer. In addition, the focus was on high visibility on the campus, and the generous communication areas in the building itself are also intended to serve as an additional exchange. “Researchers of today and tomorrow want to work in an inspiring working environment,” Moritz Fischer believes.
