Transport survey 2020 – Regional train in Golm heavily frequented

Good transport connections are of the utmost importance for the more than 13,000 employees and students in the Potsdam Science Park, the largest science location in Brandenburg. In the summer of 2020, the University of Potsdam and the site management of the Potsdam Science Park conducted an extensive survey to determine which transport connections are most frequented.

The response was positive: In the months of June and August 2020, a total of 2046 employees and students from the Potsdam Science Park as well as Golm residents took part in the surveys on their personal traffic behavior – with insightful and clear results for the research and innovation location.

The survey focused in particular on the frequency of individual sections of the route and means of transport, the starting and changing points at which commuters start or continue their journeys, and the use of certain means of transport, in particular local public rail passenger transport. The evaluation of the results resulted in an exciting new perspective on the location community, which we are happy to share with you today.

Keeping an eye on the transport turnaround

The survey showed that the commuters of the Potsdam Science Park are anticipating the transport turnaround. More than 80% of the total of 1563 people of the 2046 respondents stated that they commute to Potsdam-Golm mainly by bus and train. 940 people, or almost 50% of respondents, answered that they would cycle routes to the Science Park or link bicycles and public transport. Only 614 people use a car.

The survey results also clearly show the immense importance of the rail connection for the growing research and business location. The employees and students live mainly along the railway lines and in particular the 30-minute connection with the RB21 to the Berlin Stadtbahn is very busy at rush hour and is therefore one of the “main arteries” for the Potsdam Science Park.
